Hon. Jerry Yakubu is the Chairman of Wukari international Yam market in Taraba State. Yakubu spoke to a team of Journalists recently in Wukari.
Wukari the capital city of, one of the most organized ancient empire, the Kwararafa is a town located in Northeast of Nigeria with rich Africa tradition and culture. The Aku uka is the supreme Leader with his magnificent palace in the centre of the city, Wukari also house great institutions like the Federal University and a private Kwararafa University, here is where the famous International Yam market that welcome traders from all over the country and beyond to engages in buying and selling of this all important "king of cash" crop Yam.
Yam is intensively farm in Taraba and Benue States due to it arable land that support the farming of this crop.
In the centre of farming and business of this all important crop Yam, is Hon. Jerry A Yakuku (JP), Chairman of Yam int'l market Wukari. Recently he spoke to ALGON Reporters suing for peace at all time believing that, is only in an atmosphere of peace that businesses can thrive, he called on the people to embrace peace during Election or any other time to increase confidence of traders to come to wukari Int'l market and do business, especially at this time that one of them is Governing the State.
" I want our people to support Gov. Agbu Kefas who is from Wukari here and when there is peace, traders will have confidence and will come to the market and buy Yams and you know yam is perishable, so if traders do not come to buy it is the people that will suffer the lose".
Hon. Yakuku enumerated some of the challenges facing the market and their business to include, flooding in the Market, some time discouraging their Customers from coming, as their lorries sometime get tripped at the market for days if not weeks, others setback they are experiencing is lack of water, perimeter fancy of the market, better Warehouse, lighting in the market he said is very poor, the toilet in the market is not enough to serve the market and over taxes by Neighboring State of Benue discouraged their Customers from coming to the market. Above all, the increment in the prices of petroleum products had really affected their businesses while he called on relevant level of government to please come to their aids
The Chairman of Wukari Int'l Yam market advocated for Individuals or government to come and site industries that can add value to yam inorder to save it from waste and increase foreign earning to the country.
